Founder member: Shears Brothers (Transport)

As we look ahead to the next 20 years of Pall-Ex, our anniversary year is also a time for reflection and to celebrate everything that has made the network the success it is today.

At the very heart of Pall-Ex are our members and some have been with us since the very beginning. Here, we profile another founder member, Shears Brothers (Transport) and take a look back at their time with us.

Shears Bros has a history dating back to 1955 and has gone from strength-to-strength since becoming a Pall-Ex member in 1996. The company was also the recipient of Pall-Ex’s coveted Depot of the Year award in 2010.

“Joining Pall-Ex opened up the opportunity to distribute across the whole of the UK and, as a consequence attracted new business into our portfolio,” said sales manager Ian Shears.

"I remember our first night in the network when we received around 20 pallets for the whole of our coverage area. Today, that number is more like 280 every night."

Over the years, the team at Shears Bros, which is based at Bournemouth International Airport, has grown from eight, to in excess of 100. As well as helping to significantly boost the team, Ian believes being a Pall-Ex member has created a much more robust business.

“Pall-Ex assisted us to broker a deal to gain regional partner status with a major European haulier. Being a member also helped us to achieve rapid growth joining the economic downturn and has put us on a sound footing for the future. If we hadn’t joined Pall-Ex, I can honestly say that we may not have had a business now.”

Whilst Ian believes the pallet sector is likely to consolidate over the next 20-years, he is confident that Pall-Ex will continue to lead the way.

“I believe there will continue to be some casualties in the industry,” concluded Ian. “However, the innovative networks like Pall-Ex, who continue to invest in technology, who continue to build and protect their members and who can maintain coverage and ensure consistent quality and reliability, will not only survive but will prosper.”
